There are many differences between LCD and LED displays, as follows:
Working Principle
LCD display: It belongs to liquid crystal display. Liquid crystal itself does not emit light, but relies on external backlight to illuminate. The liquid crystal molecules are stimulated by electric current to change their arrangement state, control the transmission and blocking of light, and thus form an image.
LED display: Using light-emitting diodes as light-emitting units, when current passes through semiconductor devices, electrons and holes recombine to directly release light energy. Each LED lamp bead can independently control brightness and color without the need for additional backlight.
Screen structure
LCD display: It is usually composed of multiple components such as liquid crystal layer, glass substrate, polarizer, color filter and backlight. The backlight source is located behind the screen, and the light is modulated by the liquid crystal layer and color filter to display the image.
LED display: It is mainly composed of an array of LED lamp beads, with a relatively simple structure. The lamp beads are directly arranged in a matrix form to form a display screen.
Display Effect
Color performance: LED display screens have higher color saturation and vividness, and can present richer and more vivid colors, and have better color reproduction; LCD display screens are slightly inferior in color, but modern high-end LCD display screens have greatly improved color performance through technical optimization.
Contrast: LED display screens can make bright parts brighter and dark parts darker through local dimming technology, achieving higher contrast; LCD display screens are prone to light leakage when displaying black due to the uniform backlight, resulting in relatively low contrast.
Brightness: LED display screens generally have higher brightness, and can clearly display content even in strong light environments; LCD display screens have relatively low brightness, and may be difficult to watch in strong light outdoors.
Response time: LED display screens have fast response speeds, short pixel lighting and extinguishing times, and almost no ghosting when displaying dynamic images; LCD display screens have relatively slow response times, and may have ghosting when displaying fast-moving images, but with the development of technology, the gap between the two is gradually narrowing.
Energy consumption and lifespan
Energy consumption: LED displays are self-luminous and have high luminous efficiency. When displaying black or dark images, energy consumption can be saved by reducing the brightness of the lamp beads. They are usually more energy-efficient than LCD displays. LCD displays need to continuously power the backlight source. No matter what is displayed, the backlight source maintains a certain brightness, and the energy consumption is relatively high.
Lifespan: The service life of LED displays is relatively long, generally up to 50,000 hours or more; the lifespan of LCD displays is greatly affected by the backlight source, especially products using CCFL backlight sources, which have a relatively short lifespan and may need to replace the backlight source after a certain period of use.
Appearance and thickness
LED displays: Since there is no need for a large backlight system, LED displays can be made thinner and lighter, with a more refined appearance and narrower borders, which can achieve a nearly borderless design.
LCD displays: Because components such as backlights need to be installed, the overall thickness is relatively large, especially the early LCD displays that used CCFL backlight sources, which are thicker.
Price and Application
Price: Generally speaking, the manufacturing cost of LED display screens is high and the price is relatively expensive; LCD display screens have mature technology, large production scale, and relatively more economical price.
Application scenarios: LED display screens are suitable for outdoor advertising, stadiums, stage backgrounds, large shopping malls and other occasions with high requirements for brightness, viewing angle and display effect. They are also often used in game monitors that require high contrast and fast response; LCD display screens are widely used in personal electronic devices such as computer monitors, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and some occasions that are more cost-sensitive and require smaller display size.
