TFT LCD screen VS IPS LCD screen

There are significant differences between TFT screens and IPS screens in many aspects. Here is a detailed comparison of the two screen technologies:

1. Designation and technical basis

‌TFT screen‌: The full name is thin film transistor liquid crystal display, which is a display technology that uses thin film transistor technology to control liquid crystal units. It belongs to a type of active matrix liquid crystal display (AM-LCD).

‌IPS screen‌: The full name is In-Plane Switching screen, which is an advanced liquid crystal panel technology. In essence, it is still an improvement or variant based on TFT technology, which optimizes the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules.

2. Advantages and Features

‌TFT screen‌:

‌High resolution‌: It can provide clear images and rich details.

‌Color reproduction‌: It can display up to 16.77 million colors and has excellent color reproduction.

‌Fast response speed‌: It has a very short response time and is suitable for fast operation scenes.

‌Wide viewing angle‌: Although not as good as IPS screen, it can maintain a certain clarity and color when viewed from the side.

‌Low power consumption‌: Compared with other display technologies of the same size, it has low power consumption.

IPS screen‌:

‌Large viewing angle‌: Usually up to 178 degrees, the color and brightness are almost the same from all angles.

‌Accurate color reproduction‌: True reproduction of the colors in the picture, especially important for industries with extremely high color requirements.

‌Fast response speed‌: Can clearly present dynamic pictures, reduce smearing and blurring.

‌Hard screen characteristics‌: It is not easy to produce water ripples when pressed, and it is more stable and durable.

3. Structure and arrangement

‌TFT screen‌: The main components include fluorescent tubes, light guide plates, polarizing plates, filter plates, glass substrates, alignment films, liquid crystal materials, thin-film transistors, etc.

‌IPS screen‌: Both poles are on the same surface, and the liquid crystal molecules are arranged horizontally. This arrangement makes the molecular structure of the IPS screen slightly sink downward when it is subjected to external pressure, but the overall molecules remain horizontal, thus maintaining the stability of the picture effect.

IV. Limitations and Application Scenarios

‌TFT screen‌:

Limitations: high cost, easy to damage, relatively heavy and thick, and in some cases, color saturation may not be as good as other technologies.

Application Scenarios: Suitable for devices with high requirements for resolution, color reproduction and response time, such as smartphones, tablets, etc.

IPS screen‌:

Limitations: The purchase price is relatively high, and some manufacturers may choose other screen technologies due to cost considerations.

Application scenarios: Very suitable for industries with extremely high color requirements such as design and printing, as well as scenarios that require large viewing angles and stable durability, such as high-end smartphones, monitors, etc.

In summary, TFT screens and IPS screens each have their own advantages, and the choice of which screen depends on the user's specific needs and budget. While pursuing high resolution, fast response and low power consumption, if you have higher requirements for color reproduction and viewing angle, IPS screens may be a better choice; if you pay more attention to cost control and a certain wide viewing angle, TFT screens are also a good choice.
